What Are Dental Implants?

While other tooth replacements focus solely on the visible part of your smile, dental implants recreate the roots of your teeth, which are hidden below your gum line. A dental implant itself is a tiny, screw-shaped post made from titanium, which naturally fuses with your jawbone after Dr. Singh has surgically placed it there. Then, he attaches a dental crown, bridge, or denture on top, completing the visual portion of your smile.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Dental implants are unique because they replace the roots of the missing teeth. This allows for various additional benefits that you can’t achieve with other tooth replacement options. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a multi-step process that spans over the course of several months. Everyone’s treatment looks a little bit different, but here are the four steps that everyone can expect.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

The first step to getting dental implants is to attend an initial consultation. During this time, we will examine your smile to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. Some patients require preliminary procedures, like gum disease treatment and bone grafting, before they can get dental implants. If these apply to you, we will help you to get them scheduled. Once your gums and jaw are in excellent shape, we can move onto planning the rest of your treatment.

Dental Implant Surgery

To get dental implants, you need to undergo a surgical procedure. At Aesthetic Dental Arts, Dr. Singh can place your implants right here at our practice, so you don’t need to work with another dentist at a different location. After numbing the mouth with a local anesthetic, he will place the implants are precise angles and locations in the jaw. Then, the gums are closed, and protective caps are placed over the ends of the implants to keep them safe as they heal.

Dental Osseointegration & Abutment

Over the next three to six months, your dental implants will fuse to your jawbone in a process called “osseointegration.” This is what makes dental implants so sturdy, strong, and long-lasting. Once the implants have healed, you will need to undergo another minor procedure where small connector pieces, called abutments, are attached to the ends of the implants. Impressions are taken so your custom restoration can be crafted at the dental lab.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

When your restorations are complete, you will need to return to our practice. We will attach your replacement teeth to your dental implants via the abutments. If everything looks and feels great, you will be free to show off your new and improved smile to the world!

Benefits of Dental Implants

As a result of their comprehensive structure, dental implants can improve your life in more ways than you might have thought. They offer several benefits and traits unattainable with traditional treatments, such as:

  • A success rate of over 95%
  • Preventing your jawbone from deteriorating
  • Looking and feeling natural
  • Always staying in place

On top of and because of these traits, there are plenty of other benefits that you shouldn’t overlook when considering tooth replacement. During your consultation , we can explain all the various ways implants can be truly life changing.

Day-to-Day Benefits

When you have prosthetic teeth that are fully integrated with the jawbone, you can bite and chew foods without worrying about slippage. In addition to more confidence in eating, this stability can give you assurance when talking with others. Instead of feeling self-conscious about your replacement teeth, you can speak clearly and not think twice about implant-retained restorations.

Every day, your implants will need care, but it’s much simpler than caring for traditional dentures. You just need to brush and floss them like normal teeth!

Health Benefits

Raw fruit and vegetables most often contain the highest number of vitamins and minerals, but they can be difficult with normal dentures. Restoring your biting and chewing power, dental implants enable you to eat more nutritious foods. As a result, you can be more active, do the things you want to do, and enjoy better overall health. In other words, dental implants can lead to a healthier lifestyle and better quality of life!

Long-Term Benefits

Did you know that dental implants have the potential to last for 30+ years with very little maintenance? Rather than paying to substitute dentures or bridge replacements every five or so years, you could keep your implants for decades, which means that overall cost could be lower in the long run. In other words, the upfront cost of implant could well worthwhile years from now when your replacement teeth are still going strong.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

There’s a good chance you’re a viable candidate for dental implants if you have a generally healthy mouth and body, are dedicated to maintaining good oral hygiene habits, and have a dense enough jawbone to support the implant posts. As long as you meet these qualifications, there’s no limit to the number of teeth that Dr. Singh can replace with dental implants.

Missing One Tooth

A single tooth can be replaced by positioning one implant post into the gap and then attaching a dental crown on top of it. The implant and crown are both self-supporting, meaning we don’t need to modify your surrounding teeth like we would if we were placing a dental bridge.

Missing Multiple Teeth

To close the gap between several missing teeth, we can place a dental implant at either end and secure a bridge on top. Not only is an implant bridge more cost-effective than replacing each tooth with its own implant, but we can leave all of your remaining natural teeth intact.

Missing All Teeth

When an entire arch of teeth is missing, our team can place between four and six implant posts along the jawbone before securing a custom-made denture. This allows for a more stable and functional prosthetic that doesn’t slip while eating or speaking.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

Each treatment plan is uniquely complex, making it impossible for us to provide a universal cost of dental implants. The number of posts, type of restoration, and any preliminary procedures can all impact the final price of treatment. Our team will review these factors and go over your payment options, including our in-house dental plan. Also, because dental implants can potentially last for the rest of your life, they’re a smarter long-term investment.
