What are Veneers?

Veneers are considered to be a unique form of cosmetic dentistry because they act like small masks for imperfect teeth. Placed over the front-facing enamel surfaces, they conceal flaws of all kinds (i.e., chips, cracks, stains, discoloration, minor gaps, misshapen teeth, minor misalignment, etc.) so that only a uniform smile remains.

Ceramic and porcelain are the two most common materials used to craft veneers, and both can deliver a beautiful natural appearance that you will love. Apart from enjoying a more cohesive grin, you’ll also appreciate their long lifespan (an estimated 10-15 years), stain-resistance, and semi-permanent form of treatment.

The Process of Getting Veneers

There are a few steps that are required to receive dental veneers. First, you must meet with Dr. Singh for a scheduled consultation. He will listen to your smile goals and address any concerns before developing a plan that incorporates which imperfections he will conceal with the help of veneers.

Once you agree to the proposed plan, he will start to prepare your teeth by removing a small portion of tooth enamel. This is necessary to ensure that the bonding agent holds your new veneer in place once it is attached to the enamel.

An impression of your teeth will then be captured and sent to a dental laboratory. There, technicians will use the model to fabricate each veneer based on the size, shape, and color requested by you and Dr. Singh. After they are returned to our office, you will come back to have them put into place.

While waiting for your finalized veneers, you will be fitted with temporary ones so that you can begin to get used to living with your new teeth. They will be removed once your permanent veneers are ready. Dr. Singh will carefully take the temporaries off and position your new restorations so that they sit flush against your gumline for a more natural appearance.

The Benefits of Veneers

  • Natural Appearance – Veneers are crafted based on the shape, size, and shade you choose. You and your cosmetic dentist will ensure that your new smile appears completely natural so that you can enjoy greater confidence.
  • Fast Results – In just two appointments, you can expect to see a new and improved smile.
  • Minimal Tooth Preparation – Veneers do require that a small portion of tooth enamel be removed; however, it is not enough to cause problems. Instead, you can prepare to enjoy a set of teeth that look and feel natural.
  • Versatile – Veneers can conceal all types of imperfections, making it one of the most versatile forms of cosmetic treatment.
  • Stain Resistant – Unlike traditional enamel, which is porous, veneers are not because they are made of ceramic or porcelain. This means they are more stain-resistant.
  • Durable – Veneers can last 10-15 years with the right level of care and maintenance, so you can enjoy durable teeth that withstand daily wear and tear.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Each patient who requests veneers should expect to pay a different price. The reason is that multiple factors will ultimately alter the cost of treatment. Your consultation appointment will include time for Dr. Singh to go over the specifics of your plan as well as how much you can expect to pay. Since dental insurance is unlikely to cover any of the cost, he will discuss alternative ways you can financially afford treatment without breaking the bank.

Veneer FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Technically, no. Veneers are considered to be an irreversible treatment, and you shouldn’t attempt to remove them by yourself. However, after about 10 to 15 years, they’ll likely need to be replaced.

If you want your veneers to last for as long as possible, oral hygiene and smart dieting choices are important! Otherwise, bacteria build up could jeopardize your veneers by causing decay for the teeth underneath, and hard or crunchy foods could cause damage.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

We will have to remove a tiny sliver of enamel to make room for your veneers. This process also gives your teeth a rougher surface, making it easier for the thin porcelain shells to stay adhered. Other than that, your natural pearly whites will remain largely unaffected. Your veneers will effectively replace the removed enamel as a protective barrier, so a dental veneer treatment doesn’t increase your risk for oral health conditions in and of itself.

That said, you should maintain a good oral hygiene routine to combat daily bacteria build up!

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Yes, though we still recommend enjoying your favorite beverage in moderation! Porcelain, the material we make our veneers out of, is generally stain-resistant. However, that doesn’t make them stain proof. The dark pigments in coffee will have a harder time settling into your veneers than your natural teeth, but frequent consumption will still stain them more quickly than limited consumption.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

No; unfortunately, the products used in teeth whitening treatments are formulated for natural enamel. They’re not able to lift stains from non-porous veneers. In fact, whitening your teeth could result in a two-toned smile, because the whitening agents will only brighten the teeth not covered by veneers.

There are ways to work around this, though. If you really want to brighten up your smile, you can receive teeth whitening, and then replace your veneers. This will allow us to color-match your porcelain shells to your newly whitened teeth, creating that seamlessly pearlescent glow you’re looking for.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

It depends on your smile. In general, the idea with veneers is to simply cover as many visible teeth as necessary to give you a seamless look. For most patients, that means receiving about 6 to 8 veneers – though some need as many as 10 to 12. Still others only require 1 veneer to cover a single cracked tooth!

During your consultation, after we get a better idea of your smile goals, we’ll be able to tell you how many veneers we anticipate applying.
